Weekly Wrap

I'm going to sound like a broken record until April is up: why don't you join us in taking The Feinstein Challenge? For every gift you send to Union Mission through next month, the Feinstein Foundation will send a portion of $1 million to fight hunger. We have an entire section of our website now set up to tell you more about The Feinstein Challenge. Just visit us there and click on the "Feinstein Challenge" tab.

There's a great piece on Google news right now about Sacramento, California's "Tent City." It's a community of homeless living on the banks of the American River, and with the current economic crisis its population is swelling.

Points to ponder: is it possible that conditions could get that way here in Charleston? Why or why not? What conditions would have to exist for there to develop a swell in our homeless population?

I was fortunate enough to connect with Mark Horvath on Twitter the other day. Horvath's story is a great one. Formerly homeless, he now runs InvisiblePeople.tv, a web portal "dedicated to capturing the stories of the homeless." (Follow them on Twitter here.) We're always excited to meet other people dedicated to social justice, and it's more proof of just how meaningful relationships can be formed using social media. If you don't already, sign up for Twitter (it's free) and make sure you follow us there. We're at Twitter.com/WeFeedPeople.

(By the way, Mark is currently out of work and in need of God's provision, so I would ask you to pray for his situation.)

Points to ponder: what is your reaction when you encounter a homeless person on the street? Do you turn away? Do you engage in conversation? What's the best way God would have us handle those moments when we meet someone in need?

Finally, I had the opportunity to speak during a church service Friday, and I thought I would share the message with you. You can read the text of it here.

I hope you'll take a moment to connect with us and join the conversation on how we can all help feed people in our community. Join us here, on Twitter, on Facebook, Flickr or YouTube. Heck, connect with us on them all!
